- Introduction to Website Design Training

- The course was the first of what is going to be a number of web design courses ran in the Bournemouth area and is going to be further developed from the feedback of the attendees.
The course titled "An Introduction to web design for business" was intended to raise the awareness of some of the major concepts of web design. The session was divided in to six key tracks:
1 - What is a website?
This seemingly obvious question was answered by positioning a business's website potential as a business tool. Areas discussed were using a website as a:
- Marketing tool
- Sales tool
- Support tool
- Communications tool
Realating to the contexts mentioned above, the benefits of owning and using a website as a business tool were presented and further discussed with much involvement from the group. Some of the key benefits identified were:
- Awareness
- Sales
- Raising profile
- Generating respect and authority
- Providing customer satisfaction
- Reaching a global audience
A key emphasis was put on the importance of a customer focused website and understanding customer requirements. This involved activities of discussing matters of who are the audience and positioning yourself in their shoes in order to determine the best content to present.
4 - How do you build a website?
In this session, the training session moved towards a more technical track. The group went through the process of creating a website using basic tools available with most standard desktop PCs and then further discussion on the alternative free and purchasable tools that can be used. Technical areas discussed and demonstrated were:
- Domain Names
- Hosting
- HTML
- Graphics Tools
- FTP
This was an understandably popular topic for discussion. Search engines, or more generally Online Marketing. This is of key importance when designing a website. Topics discussed covered Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) from a technical aspect, a content aspect and best practices approach. Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising including a brief demonstration, viral marketing and other online marketing approaches.
6 - Where Next?
With such a broad subject to cover in the three hour session available, the level of detail was brief but gave a good insight for the participants. The session was left with details on where to look to find out further information on the particular areas of interest and questions and answers.
