Showcase: Manufacturing - Production Line Testing Software Application

One of the many successful application development projects that Moov2 have undertaken in large manufacturing environments was the development of this production line testing project.

Our client is bound by a duty of care and legislative requirements to test their products against stringent electrical safety standards. To this end an automated Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) machine was acquired and integrated into the production line processes.

Whilst the testers were able to use the PAT testing machine to ascertain compliance or failure to the predefined safety standards of the products in question, there was a manual paper based record keeping and audit system in place which displayed a large margin for error which was considered by the manufacturing managers to be entirely unacceptable. Not only was this margin for error a threat to the business, but also failure in the process could have resulted in injury being caused to a member of the public, and the ramifications that come with such breaches of safety procedures.

Our client’s wish to continuously improve both operational efficiency and safety required a serious software application to be developed, and as such we undertook in the first instance a feasibility study in order to address the characteristics of the user group and their competency with information technology, as well as the environment in which they were to use the application.

The final solution integrated with the PAT testing machine via serial port communications and received electrical test output results which were then stored within the application’s database and could be audited for compliance using simple and intuitive management reporting functionality.

The test application itself presented a touch screen interface with simple user navigation and pictorial instructions to make working with the new manufacturing software simple, which reduced the need for lengthy training and education of new users. The overall result was a safer, more efficient end of production line testing environment.
